Thaddeus confessed Jesus is Lord!

The Central New York Church of Christ family had the blessing of hearing a powerful “guest evangelist” Sunday, April 13 . . . and his name just happens to be Andrew Smellie! With the Adams and O’Donnell’s encouraging the growing fellowship of disciples in Chi-town, Andrew preached a stirring message from Acts 20Open Link in New Window. Preaching without hesitation and with grace as the motivation was the theme, as Andrew called us back to the standard Paul upheld with tears every day for three years in Asia–not a standard of leadership but a standard of discipleship!!

It’s exciting that when we do live by this standard of wholehearted devotion to God, our lives will bear much fruit, just as Paul’s life did. The campus disciples at Syracuse University are fired up to see their friend Thaddeus make this decision to follow Jesus. Despite trials and persecution from religious students angry at the challenging message of Jesus not being watered down, the joy-level of the SU disciples is growing!

Building a Great Church - Acts 1-4

Posted on April 8, 2008

Preached by Chris Adams - April 6, 2008

SU student, Alberto Mulero, got baptized this past Sunday, gratefully pledging a good conscience toward God that he would take on Jesus’ light yoke of joyful service.

Let’s gratefully share our faith this week!

Isaiah 35:6Open Link in New Window

Then will the lame leap like a deer,
and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness
and streams in the desert.

Yes, Jesus built a great church on the foundation of the apostles belief that he was the Christ–but also on their example of living out their faith with great joy! Their lives showed how they responded to the resurrection and forgiveness of their sins, by the way they committed themselves to teaching the whole world about God’s great love.

In fact, there is no true discipleship without great joy. However, many today are looking for joy to come from a sanitized version of Jesus’ message. “You killed the author of life,” was how they (lovingly!) shared their faith because they knew true freedom only comes from truly hating what our sins did to Jesus. Let’s be inspired by the great boldness of men and women in the first century who listened to the Word and DID what it said–and we will see God do more than we can ask or imagine in His church today!

The question we must all ask ourselves is:

If everyone was like me, what kind of church would this be?

The Miracle of Forgiveness

David Jefferson’s communion testimonial:

God chooses us to be forgiven and commands us to forgive.

Are you like Jesus in the way he forgave? Lewis Smedes says,

Forgiveness is love’s toughest work.

Sometimes we react to pain in relationships or to disappointment in unmet expectations by pulling back and protecting ourselves, instead of extending mercy and striving to understand and trust others’ motives. We can actually be stewing in a big pile of un-forgiveness and mis-label our own feelings of anger, sadness or hurt, justifying our need to hold onto them (in our minds and hearts) until someone promises us the pain will go away.

You might be waiting a long time for the pain to go away, since God wants to teach us something through it all! This is precisely the pain that God allowed Jesus to endure for each one of us to have a life-long motivation of love and gratitude . . .that God would forgive our sins against His Son–wow! How much more then do we need to follow in his footsteps and learn how to deal with pain, learn how to suffer, learn how even to love the way Jesus loved. We hold the world’s opportunities to experience the love of the cross hostage, if we delay forgiving others. And God Himself designed it that way, so that we would rely on His strength to live this way!
